With the autumn leaves falling and dancing through the sky a corner brick building greets you, spiking curiosity…Convivio Cafe is as inviting in the inside as it is on the outside. Convivio Cafe is a women and immigrant owned, Guatemalan inspired café with its ethos surrounded around “el convivio” - which in English means “a get together where all are invited”.
It has been a minute since I have entered a cafe and felt almost at home. I am immediately greeting with a “Buenos Dias” and a warm invitation to order. The space smells like cardamom, coffee beans, and cinnamon while Lola Beltrán is being played on the background. It’s almost like I could picture my Tita (nickname for my grandma) making atole or apple pie while I stayed with her during the holidays. I ordered an Americano as I always do, but their menu was filled with really interesting things like Aguas Frescas, Cortadito, and Romero Santos which I really have to try next time. It consisted of rosemary syrup, espresso, and steamed link.
For lunch I ordered the Tostada Trio, which consists of three tostadas topped with different things. One had frijoles, the other had guacamole, and the last one was a tomato and red bell pepper sauce. I followed their advice and added some a curtido of pickled veggie mix. This was really good, and a great shareable plate, botana or something just for yourself. It took me back to my elementary school days where my mom would sometimes pack me those orange tostadas with frijoles or sometimes with lime and tajin.
There was so much more to explore on their menu and I can’t wait to go back. Follow them on Instagram as they are constantly having community events to connect and meet people. I really excited to go back and read my Kindle by the window couch and some cafecito.
